The Rhode Island jurat is a notarial certificate that a notarial officer uses to notarize a sworn written declaration that an individual has made. Before filling out the jurat, the notary must witness the subject signing the written statement and swearing an oath or affirmation expressing that the affidavit/statement is truthful. Furthermore, the individual must be able to prove their identity to the notary. In most cases, the individual should be able to present at least two (2) pieces of photo ID that display their signature. When filling out the certificate, it is recommended that the notary affix an official seal or stamp. However, a notary stamp or seal is not required by State law.
